Lifespan is expected to increase as new technologies progress. That is why we are interested in improving the health of the aged so that long life can be productive and enjoyable. One area of research for improving health and reducing the comorbidities of aging is brown adipose tissue. Brown adipose tissue improves energy metabolism and has protective mechanisms against obesity. This is in comparison to white adipose tissue, which has multiple negative effects on health and lifespan.

This study investigated the role of brown adipose tissue and its ability to increase lifespan, improve healthful aging, and support a healthy metabolism. The study found brown adipose tissue in mice to significantly increase median life span and to protect against age-induced thymus atrophy, hair loss and graying, dermatitis, and age-dependent physical deformities of the spine.
